No commentsToyota battling with GM for #1 sales
The Japanese auto giant Toyota is on track to overtake the US’ General Motors as the world’s largest automaker this year with worldwide sales of 4.72 million vehicles. Toyota dropped behind General Motors in global sales in the second quarter of the year but regained their lead for the first half of the year.
The revenue and growth rate figures that were released yesterday indicate that by the end of the year, the Toyota Motor Corp could possibly overtake GM, which has been the world’s largest automaker for the last 76 years. These rankings are determined by full-year production figures, not sales.
Toyota said worldwide sales in the April-to-June quarter totaled 2.37 million vehicles, while GM said its global sales reached 2.41 million.
In the first quarter, Toyota sold more cars and trucks around the world than GM for the first time ever. They managed to sell 2.35 million vehicles to GM’s 2.27 million.

No commentshybrid and more hybrid from Toyota
The chief of the North American Toyota Motor Corporation said vehicles powered by gasoline-electric (hybrid engines) will dominate U.S. roads as fuel prices continue to rise.
“Eventually, everything will be a hybrid,” said Jim Press, president of Toyota Motor North America, in an interview today in New York. Hybrids have been driving Toyota’s growth in the U.S., he said.
Toyota executives have mentioned they expect at minimum of 175,000 Prius hybrids to be sold in North America this year. This is a bigger figure from about 109,000 in 2006. Hybrid powered vehicles reduce fuel use and emissions by combining a gasoline engine, an electric motor with a battery pack and brakes that capture energy from stopping.
“The Prius is the forerunner,” Press said. “It’s going to be like the Model T when you look back,” he said, referring to the ubiquitous, low-cost Ford Motor Co. vehicle produced more than 80 years ago.
Ever-increasing gasoline prices have also driven consumers into newer types of vehicles, such as crossover sport-utilities, and away from large SUVs, said Press. “You don’t buy a car for image any longer that’s a big gas guzzler,” he said. This is why the Prius has such an attractive buying incentive.
The average price of a gallon of gasoline in the U.S. rose 28% in 2007 to $2.98, according to the American Automobile Association. In Australia we are seeing it reach as much as $1.38 per litre.
No commentsToyota No.2 Seller in US
The Toyota Motor Corp became the second largest seller of new vehicles in the US auto market during the first half of 2007. Beating the rival Ford Motor Co and following General Motors Corp.
Toyota sold a record 1,331,074 units in the six months through June (8.8 per cent increase from the same period in 2006,) taking the second spot for the first time on a first-half basis as higher gasoline prices lured customers to more energy-efficient Japanese vehicles, Autodata Corp said. So their hybrid vehicles paid off well.
No commentsHonda’s Technique
You rush a project and generally quality suffers.
No matter how successful an automanufacturer you are, it takes a certain amount of time to develop a new car. Toyota proved this last week by announcing they would add engineers, stretch its development process and cut-down on the rapid pace at which they have been opening new assembly plants. Toyota’s reputation is very high for the quality and reliability of the cars and trucks they manufacturer. Although it has slipped lately, plenty other automakers would still be more than happy to swap quality reports with Toyota.
Honda would think differently though.
Well on their way to the 12th consecutive year of sales records in the United States of America, Honda’s expansion has been very smooth. Bumps along the road include automatic transmission problems, the failed Civic del Sol and the recently discontinued Accord hybrid.
Honda’s development process is dominated by their engineer force, and its relatively small model line allows it to boost sales by moving into new market niches. Toyota on the other hand, already has a vehicle in nearly every catagory, so its easiest path to growth is by building more of each vehicle.
“We won’t chase volume,” an executive said. “The Accord’s record sales year was 1990. We’re perfectly happy with that, but Toyota is adding a second plant to build Camrys.”
“People in America think Toyota is flawless, but our guys in Japan know the company and they’ve been shaking their heads the last few years,” the executive said. “They didn’t think Toyota could do everything it said it would.”
